Same. I wouldn't buy one, but it doesn't bother me necessarily.

Wait, so it does bother me. Hmm

BMW X6 - bad kind of good (kind of like for perversity, but urge to own/hoon is slightly diminished)

It's awesome in the "What the hell were they thinking" kind of way, and it's faster than it has any right to be. For me that gives it a certain cool factor, though I would not want to own one.

Whats to like? Its bad at being an SUV (no load or people carrying ability) and its bad at being sports car...though it does an amazing approximation of an okay sports car with an amazing engine. Plus the looks are...well...tragic. Toss in that its kinda not what we all want to think a BMW is and well...there you go.

This is why I dislike the X6M:

Take 1 X5M; remove utility, add ugly.

It's fast, no argument there, but so is an X5M and you can put stuff in the back of it and you almost don't look like douche just for being seen standing near it.

Heavy, 4 seats, no trunk, no visibility, terrible off road and on road (ok at both, good at neither), slow, only comes in auto (not even DCT), no rear leg room, no rear wiper.

Solution:

Buy an F10 M5. Lighter, more seats, manual tranny, RWD, and it's not a stupid dumb-head car.

It's hard to call something with a twin turbo 550 hp V8 bad, but that's what I'm calling the X6M. It's a bad BMW and a even worse M car. Unlike BMW, I think you need to do more than throw power at a car to make an ///M version and I don't think any X models should have M versions. Nobody is going to take that big fucker racing, so why is there a BMW Motorsport version of it?

Kinja'd!!! Battery Tender Unnecessary > 472CID

Kinja'd!!!1

I'm SOOOO torn. On the one hand, you have a SUV (or SAV if you're BMW) that costs more than X5 and offers less space/practicality than an X5, is a shining example of the once taboo idea of a BMW Motorsport SUV. On the other, every person I've ever seen driving or stepping out of a X6M is the stereo type that didn't buy it for the rich history of BMW Motorsport, but because it was the most expensive SUV they sell and they need to feel superior to their peers. ...wait, those were both negatives. I guess I'm not really that torn. It's the antithesis of what BMW Motorsport once stood for. Nope.

Stop, stop, the whole thing's got too silly. Now, I've noticed a tendency for the X-series to get rather silly. Now, I do my best to keep things moving along, but I'm not having things getting silly. Those last two M-models BMW did got very silly indeed, and that last bit about a Gran Coupe was even sillier. Now, nobody likes a good tourer more than I do, except perhaps my wife and some of her friends. Oh yes, and Captain Johnson. Come to think of it, most people like a good tourer more than I do, but that's beside the point. Now let's have a good, clean, healthy outdoor vehicle. Get some air into your lungs. Ten, nine, eight and all that.

Well, to be honest it doesn't even try to be a SUV or even a Sports car (yes, by using the M performance badge it should at least try, but it actually doesn't). The looks are questionable. It's terrible at a lot of things, like many of the cars we love so much here *cough* ALFAROMEO *cough*.

But it's powerful, comfortable and can haul a trailer with both your race car and tools if you need it to. AWD and big, wide tires don't mean it's and Off Roader, but these things it can come in hand. It doesn't need love, but I don't think it deserves all that hate.

thing is...it is 100% trying to be both an suv (high ride height, awd) and a sports car (m badge) and thats exactly the market they are after, people who still believe that a Ferrari Hummer exist in real life, or want to appear to others as though...through their means...they have found the way to make it exist.

Kinja'd!!! J. Walter Weatherman > 472CID
01/06/2014 at 15:13

Kinja'd!!!0

Good.

I would absolutely never spend my own money on one, but I don't judge people that do.

It seems that most of the criticism of the car can be summed up as: (1) it is ugly; and (2) it is not very useful.

As far as looks go, that is entirely subjective, so to each his own. I, for one, kinda like the Nissan Juke, which everyone else seems to hate, so who am I to judge?

As far as utility goes, not everyone needs their car to tow a 10,000 pound trailer across the Rubicon with a family of seven comfortably seated inside. If you are someone that needs that kind of capability, this is not the car for you. But if you are not, and all you really need it to do is get groceries and occasionally carry 4 adults in comfort, then this car has more than enough utility.

What bugs me is the compromise of performance. For 94k you could buy a M3 that would be just as fast, better looking, handle better (assumption on lower CG) and have all the fancy bits. As well as a Jeep GC, which would be larger and more useful.

I am also completely unable to un-associate with a douche at work.

X6 is bad, but IMO only because it is so massive. The X4, like the Porsche Macan, makes much more sense visually and objectively.

Kinja'd!!! X-cchannel-M > 472CID
01/07/2014 at 16:07

Kinja'd!!!0

Some cars are hard to understand if you are stuck in your ways, unless you try them out. The problem with people's views of the X6 is they are trying to squeeze it into a box. "SUV with poor utility, Double Decker M Car, blah, blah". Just accept it for what it is and quit trying to compare it to things that it is not.

Unlike probably most of you, I have actually driven the X6. You'd be surprised - it does not lose a lot to the X5 in day-to-day utility. The roof slopes down in the rear but it is still perfectly adequate. It offers similar cargo area space to the X5 if you don't stack it to the roof. Unless you are moving house everyday or trying to squeeze a family of five for the weekend, it is perfectly fine. It is way more practical than a Bentley which weighs almost as much.

When did a Jalop ever judge a car purely on practicality? If that is all that matters then go ahead and buy a Toyota Highlander. If the X6 is not your cup of tea then that is fine, just don't hate it for what it's not.

Kinja'd!!! X-cchannel-M > HammerheadFistpunch
01/07/2014 at 17:16

Kinja'd!!!0

Hermann - Fantasy WRC Champion is right. It is not trying to be an SUV ala Range Rover. It is a softroader, like all the other crossovers out there. You need more utility? That's what the X5 is for, otherwise it has more than enough utility for the active couple, or more likely the urban person who likes a tall commanding vehicle but does not need all the carrying capacity of an X5. Yes, there are other vehicles that can do that but this one can do so perfectly fine.

If you love a commanding view, fast car, a bit of utility, lots of prestige and a more sporty look, this is a perfectly fine car for that. The Infiniti FX is not any more practical than the X6 yet it does not receive nearly as much hate.

Why this oddball ass jumbled together compromise that does nothing well except take up space?
